This week marks a big change. I have returned to the corporate world after more than eight years of self-employment. Just to allay any fears that this announcement might instantly generate, Traveling Savage isn’t going anywhere (except for more trips to Scotland). I will continue to write here each week and offer my expertise to those seeking help planning trips to Scotland.

There are many reasons for this life change — all of them good — and I’m excited to begin this new chapter in my life. Let me break it down for you.

When I started Traveling Savage, Sarah and I did our best to guesstimate how long it would take to determine success or failure. We settled on two years. At the time neither of us really knew how the site would generate income, but there were a lot of possibilities, enough to take the leap. Around 2009-2010, the blogosphere was exploding and many bloggers were monetizing through advertising, affiliate programs, and sponsored content. As time passed I watched many blogs become little more than internet billboards, stamped with ads and full of other peoples’ “content,” and Google steadily punished site’s for selling links.

From day one I refused to post sponsored content or sell my platform to the highest bidder. Instead, I worked through social media to build up an audience, though admittedly it was a bit of a blogger echo chamber in the early years. For Traveling Savage to be useful it needed a lot of deep, first-hand information about Scotland, so I traveled a lot (for me) and continually, doggedly, published my experiences. I’d get countless emails each week asking to post random crap about razorblades or neck pillows or food delivery services which instantly became digital trash.

My two years came and went, but now I was in the midst of writing a novel, too. We both believed in these ventures and honestly there wasn’t even a second thought about shutting it all down.

By 2014 I’d traveled in Scotland to the point where I felt comfortable advising others on their trips, so I developed a series of consultation services to help others get the most out of their trips to Scotland. Demand for these ramped up between 2014-2017 to the point where I was covering Traveling Savage’s expenses and making a small yearly profit. Not enough to pay the bills, mind you, but it was legitimate and it felt good.

Loch Eck, Argyll, Scotland

Something changed in the latter half of 2017, and by “something” I mean Google algorithms. By this point Traveling Savage was running on a 7+ year-old website and looking and feeling pretty dated, so perhaps this contributed to the sudden cold shoulder I received from Google. I’ve always been at the mercy of Google — ~95% of my consulting business came from random Googlers finding my site and requesting a consultation. This stopped almost cold turkey in September 2017, and over the next few months I witnessed Traveling Savage dropping down Google search results — from page 1 to page 2 to page 3 to page 5… Most people don’t click beyond the first page of results.

Last year was a big year for Traveling Savage and for me personally. Seeking to end Google’s moratorium on my traffic, and, frankly, because it was long overdue, I relaunched Traveling Savage with a new, updated design and additional functionality. I also re-upped my SEO game (though I hate playing it), but here I am still waiting for Google to cut me some slack.

Personally, I came to some realizations that clarified the path ahead. One of those realizations is that Traveling Savage is a labor of love. I love Scotland, I love exploring the country, I love writing about it here, and I love helping others find that same love in their travels. I will continue to do these things. But I was asking too much of it and by extension, Sarah. When this hit home I realized I could broaden my professional approach without much sacrifice.

So I have returned to the corporate world. I’m really going to enjoy working with others once again, and taking the financial burden off Traveling Savage will do wonders for my mental health. On my vacations you can bet I will be returning to Scotland for more exploring and writing. It’s premature for me to plan trips for this year, but they aren’t out of the question toward the back half of 2019.

If any of you are wondering about my novel, it’s currently in the hands of my editor and I’ll keep working on it as edits come back to me!

Thanks for reading, wish me luck, and until next time,

Sláinte!

    Hi Keith,

I enjoyed your Traveling Savage as I prepared for a few days in the Shetland Islands in March of last year after doing some business in London. I’m heading back to Shetland with my two sisters for Simmer Dim June 20-26.
I’ve hooked up w/ a tour guide, Paula Moss who’s going to take us up to Unst and we will also do the cliffs of Noss.
We are also going to do the night trip to Mousa to see the storm petrels come back from their feeding at sea to nest in the Mousa Broch. I’d be happy to share any and all of our adventures w/ you if you are interested.
Your blog is first class, but we’ve all got to eat, don’t we?

I found you today via FB feed, just so you know.

Wishing you all the best and thanks for keeping in touch with us.

Signed, a baby boomer crossing off her bucket list,

    Mary Domito

Thanks for the well wishes, Mary. I hope you have a wonderful time in Shetland — I’m sure you will — and of course I’d love to hear of your journey!

You will continue to be a great contributor wherever you are. Best wishes on this new path.

      Thanks Pat!

Best wishes on your future endeavors Keith. Looking forward to our trip to Scotland that you helped us plan!

It was such fun to plan, Jean! Thanks for the well wishes.

  4. Laura February 28, 2019 at 8:10 am

Sadly, I hate to see you go, but hopeful that perhaps you will still write and keep your site open even if it is tidbits of info coming in. I am happy for your new job and hope it is all that you wanted and needed at this time. Everything we do sets the stage for all to come so go forward with gusto!

I too share the same love of Scotland but have not had all the experience as you. I have been in love with this spellbinding country and its people forever. That said, I am headed over for Trip #4 (another glorious month) with new places to explore because of you. I found your site accidentally this last December and instantly started plotting. It won’t be my last, I seem to polarize to Alba!

Thank you for all the advice, the work and fun to get your information out, but most importantly the gift you have in writing. You are so eloquent and fun to read.

Good luck, I look forward to that book. . . Just let me all know the title. As I am an avid reader, you have a fan already right here!

Laura, thanks for the kind words. Great to find another soul enraptured by Scotland. Fear not — I’m not going anywhere! Traveling Savage will continue to exist and I will continue traveling to Scotland. I’ll share more info on my book when it’s ready!!

  5. Leslie February 28, 2019 at 8:19 am

Keith, good on you!! All the best wishes to you in the ‘corporate world’; what will you be doing there? And thank you for keeping Traveling Savage as a labor of love for those of us who love it! Happy trails-Leslie

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:12 pm

Hi Leslie. I’m returning to a bit of technical writing, a profession I have several years’ experience in.

  6. Roxanne February 28, 2019 at 8:29 am

    Hi Keith

I read your blog extensively when planning my trip to Scotland last year and you were the main reason we stopped at some of the sights that we saw. I also took your advice on who to rent a car from. They were fantastic. Thanks for your insight. Best wishes in your future plans.

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:14 pm

I’m so happy to have helped in your trip, Roxanne. Thanks for reading!

  7. Cheryl February 28, 2019 at 9:04 am

I always enjoy your blog posts, but totally understand your decision. I used to have an in-home daycare business, and went back to work in the corporate world. My steady paycheck and a routine have helped me as I start to work European vacations into our plans.

    Best wishes going forward.

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:22 pm

Thanks, Cheryl. It’s hard to be honest with yourself when it comes to being self-employed, but you have to be. This change will give us some new freedoms and take away some old ones. Everything is a game of give and take.

  8. Cynthia Lewis February 28, 2019 at 11:14 am

All the best with all your changes. I used Traveling Savage a lot in planning our first trip to Scotland last year, Sept 2018. Keep up the great work.

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:22 pm

      Thanks, Cynthia!

  9. Donna Forsythe March 1, 2019 at 1:43 pm

    Hi Keith!

My trips to Scotland would have been greatly lacking if it hadn’t been for your expert advice. I continue to pass your name on to friends who are planning on crossing the pond. John and I will be returning to Gardenstown in a month. I have become completely spell-bound by the beauty of this lovely little country. Already have my reservations for the Balvenie tour and Speyside Cooperage!

Best of luck to you and many thanks for your assistance with all things Scotland!

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:24 pm

So glad you found a place you love so deeply, Donna. Congrats on following your muse. It was a pleasure to work with you. Thanks!

  10. Beth Parks March 1, 2019 at 5:53 pm

Wishing you all the best! I always enjoy your site and having been to Scotland only once it inspires me to make sure I consult with you when I get there again. Thank you!

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:24 pm

You’re most welcome, Beth. I look forward to helping you plan your trip in the future!

  11. Jacque Fisher March 1, 2019 at 11:47 pm

“The only constant is change,” eh? Sounds like it was time for a change in your life, and I am happy for you. Thanks to you, my husband and I spent two wonderful nights at Trochelhill Country House two years ago. Thanks to you, we will be discovering the “Birks o’ Aberfeldy” this June, after several days on Mull and nearby islands. I shall continue to visit your blog for inspiration and ideas for our “next” trip to Scotland–for there will always be a “next” trip! There is no other place for us…
Best of luck to you, Keith!
    Sincerely,
    Jacque and Scott Fisher

    1. Keith Savage March 2, 2019 at 12:28 pm

If only you knew the half of it, Jacque. But change is good, generally speaking. We tend to stagnant more than over-change, if you know what I mean. I’m so glad you got to meet Ian and Dian at Trochelhill! They’re the loveliest people imaginable. Thanks for reading — I’m happy to have helped in your trip planning.

  12. Carol Bulloch March 12, 2019 at 5:24 am

Hi Keith. Since you posted this I have tried three times to comment but for some reason my words seem to have disappeared so I am trying again now. Fourth attempt or not, I still can’t find the right words to say how we feel having read your message.

We are so glad to have come to know you through Traveling Savage. You are indeed a true Scotland-lover and we know from speaking to guests who have used your services that you have helped so many people have the experience of a lifetime in our country. You have helped our business too, bringing The Dulaig to the attention of clients where we might fit with their requirements but asking nothing from us in return – except that we look after your clients of course! We know how hard you have worked to really get to know Scotland and can only guess as to the effects on your on your home and family life.

We are sorry that across so many types of business changes in the Google algorithms are making it all to easy for the “big boys” to almost corner the market, making it increasing more difficult for smaller specialist “gems” such as you to be found.

It is great to hear that you will not be lost to Scotland – please remember, you are welcome here any time and hopefully next time you come back we will have a copy of your book on the coffee table!!!

Warmest wishes to you, Sarah and your mum and dad from Carol & Gordon at The Dulaig, Grantown-on-Spey.

    1. Keith Savage March 12, 2019 at 6:40 pm

Carol, thank you for the beautiful words. The friendship I’ve found in you and Gordon extends far beyond a business venture, and it’s these kinds of relationships that are the true markers of success in my book. I will be back to share coffee and tea with you, and I will continue to recommend the Dulaig to anyone I can because you are one of a kind people and you provide a one of a kind experience.

All my best to you and Gordon, as always.
